Rare Waltham Chronograph Housed Pristine in 14K Solid Rose Gold Case

This wonderfully rare Waltham Grade Riverside Model 1884 is an uncommon size 14 chronograph featuring a “flyback chronograph” movement. The “flyback” movement was an engineering feat for its time, making it possible to start, stop, and reset the chronograph on the fly—giving the movement its name.

The movement is housed in a 14K solid rose gold case in flawless condition that gives this chronograph a rich warmth. Printed on the dial is the name “American Watch Co. Waltham,” a feature of this watch of great horological and historical interest. This watch was crafted before the American Watch Co. officially changed its name to Waltham Watch Co.

It may be difficult to imagine what use a chronograph would have been in 1887, adding to the historical interest this chronograph generates. It’s an interesting story. The chronograph was invented in 1816 by Louis Moinet for use in astronomy to track astronomical objects. By the mid-1800s, the chronograph was used by militaries to fine-tune the accuracy of their artillery pieces and in horse racing. People found additional uses for the chronograph in the 1900s after the invention of the automobile and the airplane and an increased interest in sports.

This chronograph remains in excellent condition and is a fine example of 1800s design elements used in chronographs. The limited possibilities for use during the period this chronograph was produced enhances its historic and horological value. It makes an excellent addition to any collection featuring chronographs, late 1800s military, and sports memorabilia, or to begin a collection of fine vintage chronographs.
